The Validated Touch-Video Database (VTD) features 90 videos of touch to a single left hand from a first-person perspective that varies in arousal, threat, hedonic qualities, touch type, and touch agent (object versus human). The database was validated in 350 participants (283 women, 66 men, 1 non-binary), who categorised the touch in each video as ‘neutral’, ‘pleasant’, ‘unpleasant’, or ‘painful’, and provided arousal and threat ratings (on a scale from 1 to 10, with higher values indicating stronger responses).
The 90 videos can be ordered based on key metrics including hedonic quality, threat, and arousal — either ascending or descending. This can be done by pressing the arrows next to the column names. The search box can be used to look for key words in the video Description column (e.g., “brush”). The table can be downloaded as CSV, Excel, and PDF file.
After watching each video, participants were asked the following four
questions:
1. “How would you categorise the touch in this video?”
[single answer out of the following checkbox options: neutral, pleasant,
unpleasant, painful],
2. “How [pleasant/unpleasant/painful] (category from the previous
answer) was the touch?”
[answer: 1 = not at all, 10 = extremely]
3. “How threatening was the touch?”
[answer: 1 = not at all, 10 = extremely]
4. “How arousing was this video? (Arousing in the form of a feeling,
emotion, or response)”
[answer: 1 = not at all, 10 = extremely]
